Baby Mama Drama: The Truth

I was chatting a few days ago with an acquaintance of mine who also is friends with the father of my eight year old. At the time, I didn’t realize that they knew each other. (It’s funny how small the world is sometimes.) At any rate, said acquaintance was discussing how impressed they were with how well-mannered, intelligent and well taken care of my daughter is, and noted that they wished more ‘baby moms’ (insert cringe here) were like that. He then went on to cite some of the drama that another friend of his was going through with the mother of his child. Ironically…said friend happened to be my daughter’s father. When I made the connection, I turned to said acquaintance and said: “How ironic…particularly because none of that is true…not even a little bit…” He was stunned and felt bad, and pointed out that the person that he knew me to be didn’t fit the description he’d heard at all – nor had he ever heard me utter anything negative about said father. (Well of course not, 1. You’re an acquaintance and 2. It’s no one’s business but my circle.)

I digress.

This brings me to my gripe for the day: how often do you hear about ‘disrespectful baby mamas’ whom are ‘jilted’ because they are no longer with said person? Who are only in it for the ‘child support’? Who makes their child’s father’s lives a living hell? I am certain everyone is familiar with this person, this particular stereotype. However, what about the converse? What about the single mother who is none of these things? Or, even better, what about the other side of the coin? How do we know that what we are hearing about said ‘baby mama’, traditionally from the father and/or the new young lady in said life, is actually what is…well…true?

Many of us who are reading this thread are single mothers or know single mothers. Every woman who is a mother has the potential to become a single mother – married women get divorced, women in relationships get out of relationships, etc., etc. The strain that a newborn child can bring into a relationship is a challenge – and has been the demise of many a relationship. The point is, there are many single mothers here. Period. Having said that…the stigma surrounding the ‘single mother’ is always a generalized and trite description that I, even though it does not apply to me, tend to be offended by, and this offense became fueled by a blog I read by my girl Carrie Pink, called “Dealing With The Spiteful Baby Mama.. As the New Girlfriend/Wife” In the blog, the discussion is based on a single mother who is disappointed, if you will, in the current status of the relationship with the father of her child, and thus does things that are spiteful to the new person in the man’s life.

I know women like this. I’ve seen it happen, and every time I see it happen I am apt to shake my head. However, after listening to the acquaintance who explained how he perceived me in someone else’s eyes, not realizing that we were the same person, it made me wonder if there weren’t other scenarios that were similar in nature. What if the behavior that was being exhibited by the single mother was perceived as coming from a place of anger, but in reality was far from, and was, in fact, a justified response?

Scene: Shaynii* has been raising little Alexandra* for the better part of six years. The father of her child, Miles*, is around…but it is inconsistent and he provides little to no fiscal assistance. He does care, and he does do things for said child, but he makes the minimal effort with regard to the upbringing/needs of his child. He and Shaynii deal off and on at first until Shaynii finally decides that she can no longer deal with the on again, off again relationship, so she ends it. He begins to finally see someone consistently, and introduces said person to Shaynii because he would like for this person to meet Alexandra.

Shaynii and Jocelyn* hit it off initially, and both agree that they would like to avoid the traditional drama that surrounds these sorts of relationships. As time goes on, however, Jocelyn pulls away from Shaynii as her and Miles become more serious. Shaynii brushes this off as she realizes that Miles is worried that she may tell Jocelyn things about his past that he doesn’t want her to know. She continues raising Alex the best way she knows how, and continues to include Miles in the upbringing, all the while attempting to keep an open line of communication with Jocelyn, who is no longer receptive.

As the issue of child support becomes more prevalent, Miles claims that he does everything for Alex that he should. Shaynii disagrees and points out the challenges/lack of support. More and more, she notices that when Jocelyn comes around, she is rude and curt to her, despite Shaynii being cordial, and fuels Miles’ flames if he disagrees with something that Shaynii does. Shaynii repeatedly asks to sit with both Miles and Jocelyn to have an open discussion, so that they are all on the same page – she is concerned that Alex will begin to pick up on the negative vibes. In the midst of this, Miles tries to make a move on Shaynii. Shaynii refuses. Finally, it is revealed that Jocelyn has no interest in having this conversation, she doesn’t see the need.

Shaynii is beyond frustrated, she has been hearing her daughter come home with sayings that are contrary to the way that she would like for her to be raised, and more and more she is noticing that Jocelyn is revealing private information between adults to her child. More importantly, Miles has not been contributing at all to Alex fiscally, nor is he aware of anything that is going on in her school and extra-curricular activities, outside of what Alex chooses to tell him. Finally, Shaynii decides to pursue child support. Miles and Jocelyn are incensed.

Within this particular scenario, would “Shaynii” – maintain the right to have an ‘attitude’, if you will, with her child’s father? Would this be considered a woman being spiteful or scorned? Perhaps a better question is: how many other women find themselves with their backs against the wall, and, left with no other alternative, do what they feel is the best thing to do considering the circumstance, only to be labeled ‘spiteful’? What if what has been said about the child’s mother isn’t actually true?

In human nature, we as people tend to feed into the negativity – that is, we are quick to believe the worst that we hear about people without ever questioning the validity of said information. It is, indeed, the nature of gossip as a whole – the stuff that tabloids and reality television are made of – where we as people listen to the dramatic stories and, based on the deliverer of said story, believe wholeheartedly what is said. It never dawns on us that perhaps what is being said isn’t true, that you can believe half of what you see and even less of what you hear. With that being said, I pose this final question: how many times have you made an assumption about someone you didn’t know, particularly a ‘baby mama’, without actually examining the situation for what it is?

The 1 Year From 30 Post!

I am officially 29 years old! One year left to the big 3-0!

What does that actually mean, though? Does it mean anything at all? To me it does. I’ve been seeing a lot of fuss regarding the life change from 28 to 29 to 30. I’m not quite sure why…so…

I think it’s time to do 29 Reasons Why 29 is the Best Thing Since Sliced Bread…
29. Um…hello! It’s another year, another day, another moment in time to continue living!
28. As up and down as 28 has been, it was still the most fabulous year ever…so 29 is poised to be even better!

Okay.

So I won’t do 29 reasons.

What I will do, in all seriousness, is go through the top 10 things I am looking forward to in my 29th year of life…

9. The publishing of not one, not two, but three different books. (Details to come) If I can accomplish that, babeee….!!

8. Another three to four inches of growth on my locs. (I wanna whip my hair back and forth!)

7. A renewed relationship with my own energy and my higher power.

6. The 30th birthday cruise that is in the works. (Ladies, look out for the email, allyuh know who you are!)

5. Getting down to at least a size 12. If I can do a size 10, even better.

4. A continually prosperous and enlightening relationship with the ride or dies and friends that I have.

3. A better relationship with my family, but most specifically my mother.

2. Continued blessings and a positive relationship with my daughter.

And the number one thing I am looking forward to in my 29th year of life?

1.       Continued happiness, blessings, and whatever love is out there for me, in whatever form it comes.

Cheers! =oD

Honesty Box (Self-Analysis #5 of...)

*dramatic cunt sigh*

I guess it’s time to get a little bit honest.

I know, I know. I’m a Sagittarius. I’m always honest.

But there are sometimes that even we Sags hold on to some stuff for fear of being entirely too brutally honest. If there’s one thing that I know that I’m good for being , it’s brutally honest. And that’s not always a good thing. Sometimes, brutal honesty does not come across in the manner with which you intended. Hence why it’s good to have a filter.

Having said that…

I burnt my filter and used it to smoke a beef brisket. I’m serious.

Perhaps it’s my lack of buns. It could be that. I’ve heard that a lack of sex can sometimes make you cranky. (thinks back to last time) That COULD be it…but it’s not the only thing. Lemme see how I can break this down...
1.
            Relationships.

I’m seeing too many people in relationships who were nothing but shitheads to their other relationships…and they manage to be in healthy and happy relationships. There was a time that I would shun jealousy and envy, refusing to submit to them. I’ve recently learned that envy is a natural part of life and perfectly acceptable to feel as such – it makes you human. While I do not envy often, I do envy at times the shitheads that have managed to be blessed with good, healthy relationships. While this feeling of envy is a fleeting one (I don’t want to block my blessings),I do envy it – like, how the hell did you get so damn lucky? I know, I know. Your time is coming…don’t worry about others…trust me, their karma is coming…

Eff that. (KP voice)

Moving on…

2.       Friendships.

Sigh. My friendships always seem to be an issue for me. I trust heavily when I feel that the trust is worthwhile. At the same time, when I feel the trust is gone, I get rid of them quickly. But more and more I have been wondering – how good of a friend am I? Is it that my expectations of my friends are entirely too high, and that is why I have to keep ridding myself of them? (Note: I’m not getting rid of anyone. So relax.) I’m thinking that perhaps it is that I have too many people in my life. I think that’s the problem. I don’t need to make cuts – I need to stop bringing so many people into my cot-damn life. The less people in your life, the less you have to worry about their expectations of you and vice versa. After all this time, I’m still too cot-damn nice.

That’s going to change.

Perhaps, because I am the common denominator here…it’s time for me to take the step back and examine me.

3.       Love and Shit.

Urghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh….

I always love the wrong effing people. No really, I do. I fall for people that I probably have no business falling for. Oh yeah, sure, they teach me a lot and in abundance when I do so, but when I love, that person gets a piece of me. And to tell you the truth, I’m a bit over that. I have half a mind to just hit all the dudes up that I’ve ever fallen for and just be like, “so this is how I felt/feel, can I have my piece of me back?”

I’m serious.

I have some calls to make this evening. Some people will be thrilled with what I have to say. Some will be pissed as hell. Others still may feel indifferent. #shrug. Deal with it. This is ME. And, if I haven’t already mentioned this to you…I’m an intense mother-shut-yo-mouth.

Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that this is a venting post, designed to…well…vent. It has no true bearing on my actions, deeds, or feelings for anyone. Everyone in my life (that I like) is safe for the moment, and will not be cursed out/told off/cut off. #thatisall

As this is a venting post, please feel free to vent as well…

Sexy Intimacy Love Lust Bullsh...

Your skin possesses a thin sheen, a glisten only accomplished from one of two acts of exertion. This time, it’s not the gym – Lord knows, you can’t remember when last you stepped inside of that place. A touch turns into a caress. Caress turns into that grip on your hip – the one right before your back arches – and you lose all control.

Later on, you all lie against damp sheets and discuss everything under the sun. Perhaps you don’t. Perhaps you lay there in post-bliss. You might decide to cuddle – your front to their back – or the reverse. You could even dispense with all of the above – and just go to sleep. If it’s a 4 am relationship, then maybe you’re just about headed back to the car at this point. (If you are headed to the bus, I think now would be an ideal time to consider a new 4 am relationship.)

Maybe you’re just gearing up for round 2. Or 3.

Any of the above scenarios sound familiar? They should.

If you are sexually active, then chances are, one of the following above scenarios have occurred, at some point or another. Sex, in all of its facets, is an enjoyable exertion of calories, pleasures, positions, etc. Many songs have been written about this seemingly private deed. I am 100% sure that there is not a person out there that couldn’t name at least 2 songs based on sex. (Don’t worry. I’ll wait.)

Now. Pay close attention to my next question. Of the above scenario – which was the most appealing part?

Some of you might have said the back arching part. (Especially if you are currently backed up.) Others might have quoted the cuddling as your favorite part. I’m willing to bet that the vast majority of you, however, said that you valued the whole experience. Sex without intimacy is, for all intents and purposes, simply rutting. Everyone craves intimacy in some form - whether they want to admit it or not. Often, in my opinion, intimacy is coupled with the idea that said people coupling are in some form of committed relationship – which is not necessarily the case – or is it?

So I throw out the question to you: Do you prefer sex – or intimacy? What is your definition of both? When in those moments of craving bodily contact, is it for the sex – or for the intimacy?

Be honest…

Disappearing Acts

"And then there're the ones who got scared when they realized I wasn't playing. 'You're too intense', one said. 'Too serious', said another one.
I told them that this wasn't high school or college, but the grown-up edition of life. They were still comfortable not having a care in the world, so I let 'em run and hide, especially the ones that needed professional help.  So now I'm taking off the blindfolds and doing the bidding myself".
- "Zora", Disappearing Acts by Terry McMillan

I probably should preface this by saying that I am not nearly as angry as the "Zora"s of the world...or hell, I ain't even Ms Terry mad. I'm not mad at all. I don't subscribe to "Crazy Black Woman Syndrome"...in fact, my girlfriends are convinced I am a man hiding in a woman's body...with a mean pair of shoes, a fly ass knife kit, and a fierce Mont Blanc.

But I digress...and ramble...as usual.

I'm a creature of habit and a person of patterned behaviors and exhibitions. That is to say, all of my relationships, be they jump off or otherwise, exhibit a pattern. And you may have seen me mention it before. Perhaps you haven't. The point is that there is one specific common thread: they all disappear. They pursue me with what might be considered wild, borderline obsessive abandon, and when I finally cave and give in to their charm, they back off. Of course, this is a very general assessment of my pattern - but it about sums it up - at least, in my opinion.

The first time I noticed this was about four years ago. He was the original "Disappearing Acts". Slightly older than me, attractive, well off, financially secure, kept me laughing, was Caribbean like me, and so on and so on. My guard was up at first, of course - I was coming off of the heels of the finally-off-for-good relationship with the father of my child - and I wasn't looking to get myself into a relationship. Neither was he. OK, cool, works for everyone, right? We dated - first time in my life I ever did so (seriously) - and I liked him. Like, googly eyed, "OMGhesonthephonewhatdoido?" high school liked him. But I kept my cool and proceeded at a slow but decent place. We crossed that next relationship step and everything was great.

Then something happened and all of a sudden, he disappeared. I would text him and get no response. I wish I could say that we'd gotten into some sort of disagreement or something, but we hadn't. About three months later, he hit me up like nothing had happened. I was utterly lost and I told him so. Again, keep in mind, I am obviously keeping it very general for the sake of brevity, but this is exactly what happened. I started calling him "Disappearing Acts" for that reason. We patched up that portion - but from that point on I proceeded with caution. Had a difficult time trusting him, so, admittedly, I backed away this time. He came back. We got a lot of stuff out of the way emotionally, he wanted me to meet his family (his suggestion, never mine), etc., etc, and then...

...he disappeared. Again.

I was done by then. I've since cut him off - we're cool, but I have no thoughts of pursuing anything with him at all, a fact that I made very clear. The next person - I don't really want to get into too many details, as this one is a bit sensitive for me, and not to mention that this post will go on and on if I actually get into it - but the resounding point of it would be that he disappeared, too. I will readily admit that this one shouldn't truly be considered a relationship as much as it qualifies as an "un-timed relationship".  The most recent person threw me for a loop. I had declared myself ready, you see. So when he came along, it was a bit of a smack in the face of my ready - I wasn't expecting it, nor was I expecting things to progress at the level and speed that they did (emotionally). He might have been the closest I've come to a relationship in quite some time.

I still don't really know what happened there. One day we were there - and the next, nothing. For weeks. I asked him point blank if he was interested or no - I just needed to know that I wasn't going crazy. He told me that he was, not to worry, he was just busy. That bought him about a week's worth of time. That week came and went - and I was quite over it. I can see the writing on the wall. There's busy - and then there's lack of interest. Part of it is that I'm simply entirely too understanding. And if there is one thing I've learned from my guy friends - it's if a dude is busy, no matter just how busy they are, they will find a way to be with you if that is what they want.

Which leads me, of course, to my usual self-analysis - what is it in me that causes the 'disappear' gene to rear it's unattractive head? What is the vibe that I'm putting off? This can't be any good for my already preexisting abandonment issues...And it can't be just me - others have to be experiencing something similar...

Baggage on both Sides

I'd be lying if I said I didn't have any baggage.

You'd be lying if you said you didn't have any baggage.

That's right...I called you out. Yeah, I said it.

Baggage in relationships are an interesting concept, one that I have pondered as who I am and the paths that I take in my personal development grow and become easier for me to navigate. Cue a Mary J. song. (You know that there's a Mary song for everything.) As my new found friendship/relationship/big ass ? mark grows into something that has the potential to be awesome, I find myself looking at both his baggage and, well, my own.

Let me backtrack for a second.

A good friend of mine, when talking me down from my proverbial panicked 'ledge', pointed out: "He's like an onion, gotta slowly peel the layers..." And to me, that is an ideal way to look at a relationship as it grows: each person has layers of their persona that you uncover as you get to know them. Like Chris Rock said in "Bigger and Blacker", "You can’t get nobody looking like you look, acting like you act, sounding like you sound. When you meet somebody for the first time, you’re not meeting them. You’re meeting their representative!" (What's that? You've never SEEN Bigger and Blacker? You're slacking. Check it out.) You do meet their representative the first time around. And as you get to know them better, you let a layer fall off. You shed some of that protective skin to reveal the tender skin underneath. And within the shedding of those layers, hopefully, is the revealing and shedding of baggage.

So I have baggage. Dealing with the father of my child definitely left a few scars that took me a few years to get by. (And, for the record, I went through a Caribbean man phase. I don't subscribe to that theory now.) But anyway, dealing with him taught me so much about who I was that if I ever talk to him on a semi-friendship level again, I owe him a debt of gratitude. He truly made me who I am: much more confident from having to rebuild my self-esteem, more poised from dealing with the BS, more focused from making up for lost time, etc., etc. It's true. I have baggage. And I deal with it. I don't let it deal with me.

So it's always an interesting concept when I meet a guy who also has baggage. Who steps on eggshells around certain topics because he doesn't want the 'crazy black woman' to rear their ugly head. Who is weary of the independent black woman because they don't feel like dealing with all their crazy standards. I mean, he deals with it...he works on his baggage as I work on mine...but for those of us women who think that men don't have issues like that, think again. They do and they have and they deal with it the same way we do: one day at a time.

What do you think? Is there baggage on both sides? How do you deal with your baggage?

The Dangerous 28 (Self Analysis #3 of...or is it 4?)

*toys with loc* So I'm 28.

*pensive frown*

Ok, so to those of you who are wondering what the big deal is, I'm 28 years old. To me, 28 is the milestone year, not 25 and certainly not 30. Why is that? I say that because usually, 28 is the year that most people start to...well, panic. Panic in the sense that they are 2 years away from 30 and they have to make sure that they are on the right track before they turn 30.

Because you know...life as we know it ends at 30. Didn't you know that? Aren't you glad you're reading this so that I have you on put on status? (extreme sarcasm)

Well anyway. I am starting to reach that point where I find myself wondering if I am doing everything that I need to be doing. I know. I know. It seems nuts. I'm always the one telling everyone else not to pigeonhole themselves into a timeline...not to worry about who thinks it's a shame that you're not married , or where your heart may lay, or even the little growing pains that may come your way. After my girlfriend that I haven't spoken to in a while died recently, I started thinking about what I was doing at 28 more than ever. We were the same age. Stuff like this, unfortunately, always gets you to thinking.(Then again, I'm always thinking.)

Am I doing what I need to be doing? What do I need to be doing? I mean, I think I'm doing pretty well...business is growing, my daughter is getting bigger and smarter, things are pretty good with my friends and my family, things are going well. What am I missing? Am I missing something?

To shift gears for a moment, I was reading another of my favorite bloggers, Belle Woods of A Belle in Brooklyn. She was talking about embracing your sexuality by not being afraid to show your sexual side. In my latest self-analysis (this is #4, I checked), I went back and thought about my nature and being a flirt. It's funny, but I always wondered how true it was that a woman who exudes sexuality gets it in return. Lately, I've been feeling as if the concept of me being in a long term relationship is...I don't know...limited. I tend to embrace my sexuality...but at the same time, society says that a woman who does so is labeled a freak "empowered". And the "empowered" woman gets the man - or men - but never the commitment. (At least, it doesn't appear so to me.) Then I wonder is it because men like mystery more than empowerment. Hmm.

Then I look back at all that I've accomplished, all that I've done and do, and I wonder to myself, why is it that I don't focus on my accomplishments? Why is it that many of my blogs are about relationships and sex and the like? And moreover, if I embrace my sexuality, and I don't care what people think, then why is this on my mind? What the hell happened to introspective KP, that ranted about politics and books and the like?

You see what kinds of absurd thoughts 28 brings to the table?

I think that in my process of opening up about me, I've become this relationship-obsessed person that I am not a fan of. I will be falling back. Intellectual KP is set to make a reappearance. But in the meantime...

Tell me your thoughts. How do you feel about milestone birthdays? Do you think that there is something to be said about how milestone birthdays affect your thinking?

Venus vs. Mars: Why Folks Don't Get It (aka Stop Beating a Dead Horse)

I'm sure that by now, many of you have either heard about or listened to or seen Nightline's Face Off, where they did a forum on why the Successful Black Woman cannot find a good man.

*dramatic sigh* We haven't figured this out yet? It's real simple...I didn't need to hear Steve, Sherri, Hill, and Jacque (the other panelist, Jimi, I'm ignoring him - he should stick to writing books - and what was the deal with the muscle shirt? Throw a blazer on it, my dude) explain it to me. I knew the answer a long time ago. But, being the good rambler that I am, I figure, why not address some of the broad generalizations mentioned?

Here we go...

1. Black women and their standards. Blah blah bliggedy blah. [sidebar: the first issue, even before we talk about that, is to say that the biggest problem is that we're too busy generalizing to figure out the real problem]  If I hear one more of my fellow women say that they need someone to be a Ph.D candidate or drive a car or whatever have you before they'll consider a dude, I will seriously hurl. I was talking to a homegirl of mine (who will remain nameless, but when she reads this, she'll know who she is...I told you I was gonna call you out) about eligible black men and she went down that typical 'they're all bums and the same' shtick and, of course, in typical KP fashion, I stared at her. Waited for her to finish. Then I YouTubed Katt Williams and played it for her. She started laughing. I was serious. (Usually I am dead serious when people laugh at me the hardest.) She went on to talk about their laziness, their lack of education, etc. etc.
Blank stare...you have an associates on that 4 year plan. It's a two year degree. Shhh.
There is NOTHING wrong with an associates, a certificate, any of these things. Do what you do and do it well. My problem is that you cannot sit there, demanding a Ph.D, when you don't have one. Period. End of story. It's called equally yoked. Moving on...

So many women that I encounter have these absurd 'lists' of things that they must have in order for them to be with that person...pretty skin...must be 5'11 or above...have to have their own place/car...must pay for the first date or there won't be a second date...etc. etc. Meanwhile...the 5'8 man worth a quarter of a million dollars who lives at home to keep stacking so he can take over the world just walked by you with his rubber band on his phone, because you were too busy worried about your 'standards'. And yes, that example might seem extreme (or is it?)...but it's the reality. It's not time to lower your standards...it's just time to be realistic. On the other hand...many of us become content to be in these go nowhere relationships with that quote-end quote "bum" because we don't want to be alone and so we accept whatever because we're afraid to go for what we really want. Like I said...it's time to be realistic.

2. Black Women are Bitter. Um...some are. *shrugs* And it's time to get over it. Seriously. Why should a man need to carry your baggage unless y'all are going on vacation? The next man will not do what the last one did unless you allow it. And then, in that case, that's your bad. If you're staying away from a relationship because you realize that you have baggage that needs to go into that good and deep basement storage behind the cobwebs, fine. Do you. Nothing wrong with that. It's where I am right now myself. (Well, at least, it's where I was. I wasn't sure if I was ready...I am.) But if you are going to wallow in what the last dude did to you...I know if I don't wanna hear it, then I know a man doesn't.

3. Black Men are Intimidated by Strong, Successful Black Women. No they're NOT!!! Really, I swear, they're not. If they're a real man...hunny, they are singing your praises, they are waiting for you to invite them to your big debut so they have a reason to show off, they are touting your successes every chance they get. I'm serious. I know a lot of great men, both single and taken, who I talk with about this...and they all say the same thing: some of y'all are looking at the wrong type of man...or you're seeking to make some men into something they are NOT. A good man is excited and turned on by success and wants to bask in it. Like Steve Harvey said...some men are not intimidated, they're ashamed that they're not where they want to be yet. And that may not be your issue, true...but I'm just saying. Get away from that thought process.

Dang, there's so much I want to touch on!!

4. There are no gentlemen left. To this I say...um...read this.

5. I can't find any faithful black men. You do realize that black men get cheated on too, right...? For more info and in the interest of people's contact lenses drying out, please refer back to number 2. *wink*

Now. So that it doesn't seem like I'm a man stuck in a chick's body, lemme head over to the men's side of things for a second:

1. Black women have an attitude. Some of us do. Many of us do because you think we do. Sometimes, you hit us up at the wrong time. Sorry. Stop generalizing.

2. Black women don't know how to support a man.  I don't know where the hell that idea came from, but it couldn't be further from the truth. A good woman will make your dream hers without losing sight of who she is....mainly because she has a dream of her own...and that dream could be the best damn Suzy Q Homemaker or the hottest chick in the game...or a comprehensive strategy to take over the world (are you sensing a trend with the taking over the world thing?)

3. Wait a minute...I don't have a 3 right now. I'm just gonna conclude and come together. Wait, wait, wait. Real real quick: Black women don't support their men. (Yes, this is slightly different than #2.) Ok. So. On the one hand, some of us are real quick to dismiss a brother with no job. But riddle me this, Batman...if your shorty pays your bills, feeds you, gives you ideas and/or funds your dream chasing in any way...this is support and should not be misconstrued as nagging if she eventually starts fussing at you to get a job. Money makes the world go 'round, partna. You are in the wrong country for that love run government. We all capitalists ova 'ere so...

Ok, moving on.

There are equal problems on both ends of the spectrum. I just want us to stop beating up on each other and talk to each other, communicate, however it is that you communicate. Ladies - you are going to, at some point, have to suck it up and feed your man's ego a lil. It is what it is. If you can't do that, be content with being single. Don't worry. I'll be sure to...actually, y'all can have that. I don't wallow. And I have no problem giving a compliment. Gentlemen - I hate to break it to you, but some of us like to talk...and talk some more...and be complimented...and courted and what have you. Deal with it. The reality is that so many of us are so busy looking for all the wrong, on both ends, that we will let the right walk right on by...and then get mad when it does. I said this before...it's 2010. Time to use your words.

Once we get into our heads that we are different and each situation is different and that we need to let go of our fears and inhibitions and embrace some humility, a little ego stroking, and a scoop of freak, perhaps we will be able to find what we are all looking for, be it that man who is willing to run the world side by side with them (can you tell I'm seeking world dom-eee-na-tion?? [cockroach from Fairly Oddparents voice]), or that woman who is cool with just being content in their past and happy in their future. Whatever it is. I know I'm working on not being a punk anymore. But either way...can we put this topic to rest now? Because there's a bit of an air of desperation happening now and I gotta tell allyuh, there is nothing sexy about it...

The Economics of Infidelity

So I got to reading the best book ever

More Sex is Safer Sex by Steven E. Landsburg is a book that likens economic concepts and challenges with, well, promiscuity. What's that you say? Sex and money in one book? I'm for it!! *wink*

But anyway. I'm going to talk about sex. And economics. But mostly sex.

Right.

So...when I started reading the book, Landsburg had me cracking up. He's really a rather dry and witty fellow. In it, he points out, "Whether you're...having sex, saving or spending...your actions have costs and benefits. As long as you feel all the costs and benefits, you'll tend to get the quantity right. You'll...have the right number of children, or choose the right number of sex partners. But if you feel only the benefits while someone else feels the costs, you'll tend to overindulge."

And there you have it. It's so true! Look at all of the celebrities nowadays that have been put under the microscope because they decided to 'overindulge'. Tiger Woods. Jesse James. Tiki Barber. And that's only within the past six months. Infidelity is always a topic of controversy - and, by default, entertainment. There is supply and demand in the promotion and publication of cheating!! I mean, people have been cheating since men and women figured out where to put it! I was on my Facebook page, chatting about it with my friend, and I felt compelled to point out:

"There are two distinct issues: 1. The media's need to supply controversy...and the capitalistic blood in the large masses' need to demand drama and gossip...supply and demand, kiddo...anyone who says that they're not about capitalism LIED! Think about it: the media's not going to sell anything that no one's asking for...how many people do YOU know who say that they hate the negativity of the media, but are like crack fiends to their boob tube (geesh I'm old!) when any coon...I, I mean, VH1 reality TV show comes on?

2. People think it's such a recent surge in infidelity...it's not...not by a long shot. We just have the means now to talk about it en masse...pick someone famous...in fact, pick 10 famous people and I'll bet you that 9 of them have chased a piece of tail at least once that wasn't theirs....why? Because they could! Tiger, Jesse, (our) Jesse, Tiki, Bill (Cosby), they all just managed to get caught...
..."

There you have it. The economics of infidelity. So now I ask - are we just doomed to continue to repeat the same cycles over and over? I mean, we realize now that there are many reasons that people cheat, but the main reason is that they can. Simple. After that, of course, is the reason that people, in general, are afraid to do things that may not be easy and don't have an immediate benefit. It's like I said about grinding: people will grind for their jobs because there is money, prestige, and immediate rewards involved. So why not work towards something concrete, instead of sticking allyuh parts inna everybody tail? What are we so afraid of?

Emotionally Unavailable? Yep, That's Me (Self Analysis #1 of...)

I said I was going to do this. I do my best to do what I say I'm going to do.

Self analysis is one thing. Self analysis with an audience is another.

Sigh.

So. I love reading other people's blogs. I think that it gives me insight on a lot of levels. 1. It helps me to be a better blogger, 2. It helps me see what the blog world is talking about, and 3. (and most important to me) it really is great to see what other's opinions are, especially when they're well versed.

One of the blogs I love reading is Naked With Socks On. NWSO does a great job of analyzing relationship and sexual issues, and his Wet Wednesdays usually leave me needing a wet rag...well...you know what? That's not for this blog.

So anyway. I was checking out his midnight post tonight as I attempted to put together my blog posts for Confessions of an Ex-Foodie, and the first thing I read was: "Will I Ever Make Time for Love?" All I could think of was, "Wow. Was he reading my mind or something?" A couple of days ago, I surely was trying to figure out how I was going to stay on my grind and grind for love at the same time. Then again, I'm the same person that doesn't know what love is.

Sheesh. What is going on in my brain? It's time for me to sort this out. Seriously.

And here I am. Sorting this out. Productive, isn't it? Okok. I'm going to stop rambling for just a second and actually string some thoughts together that make sense. Part of my issue is that I'm like a switch. But then, if you've been reading this for a while, then you know this. And I always said it wasn't healthy. It's not and I know this. Sometimes I'd actually like to be much more in tune with my feelings and my emotions. I'm great at giving advice...in fact, I find myself advising my friends often. I'm good with coming up with ideas and that sort of thing. But put me in an emotionally stressful situation and off goes the switch (or on, depending). I am good and emotionally unavailable. I know, I know, I know. It's not healthy. But it's safe for me. *shrugs* Right?

But what about throwing caution to the wind and just doing the not so safe thing? Ehh. I don't know that I wanna. I know I talked all that smack about how easy it is for me to grind for my career and my dreams but ask me about grinding for love and you'll get the *blank stare* from me. Although I can honestly say that I'm working on it. Sorta. Kinda. Ok, so maybe it's more like I'm going to work on it, as soon as I conjure up enough nerve. Which I have. Kinda. Sorta.

Oh, for crying out loud. I don't know!!

I'll tell you what I do know. I know that I love. Hard. Really and truly. Like, world on a silver platter hard. Like, last dollar in my bank account hard. I really am a ride or die type of person. And granted, past relationships have taught me that no matter what, do not lose sight of yourself in your quest to be joined. But a part of me, a big part of me worries and wonders if when I find that special someone that makes me a priority and not a monthly option, when I get to that place where I'm ready to be with someone in that kind of way, if I won't lapse back into that person that gives her all and everything and forgets who she is in the process. Who forgets what she's trying to be and become in the process. That is a huge worry for me.

There's more to that above. There really is. But that is for another blog and another time.

Are you emotionally unavailable or know someone who is emotionally unavailable in love and relationships? What is your take on this? Speak...discuss...comment...

The Love Grind: Are You Ready?

This blog has been a long time coming.

I hate teenyboppers and young adults who run around talking bout, "that's my hubby" or "she's my wifey" like they're married. Some even wear rings. It's really dumb and...

Wait. Sorry. I started rambling. Lemme back track.

I used to be a Facebook addict. I would log on to talk to my friends that I very rarely get to see. FB was, and still is, a venue for me to voice my opinions, frustrations, and triumphs. I haven't been on as much lately...I've had a lot of business stuff going on that has kept me busier than usual. Fast forward to the other day/the reason for this rambling. I was checking my FB page after a two week hiatus, and I ran across a few posts talking about "ily hubby" and "i love my wifey, she brought me lunch today".

*blank stare* Um...did you all get married and not tell me?

They weren't secretly married. They are just another one of the growing population who think that calling someone 'hubby' makes them married, who think that 'wifey' is an adorable term of endearment. PSA, my young ladies and gents: It's not sexy or cute and all you do is downplay yourselves when you do that. I'm a single as it comes, and even I know that being married takes a lot more than calling someone 'hubby' or 'wifey'. So, being who I am, I post my usual 'PSA' to Facebook. 23 comments later, I'm here at this blog.

One of the comments made was that they are "selling themselves short". As with most topics like this, the conversation evolved into something else that I wasn't expecting, which got me back to thinking about this: why don't we grind for love the same way that we grind for our careers, or even our friends? What makes this animal of love so different? Like, for example, I cannot begin to tell you how many people that I know that have been together for YEARS and say things like, "we don't need a piece of paper to be considered married". But um...if you're living together, and you're paying the bills together and you have mutual accounts  and mutual interests...why can't you make it all official? What is it about the word 'marriage' that has people running scared?

I guess that's where this whole love thing comes into play.

But that's where I get even more confused. Think about it, allyuh. When you want to jump start your career, you put out feelers that help you determine what job is best for you, and then you go out to get it. You'll work late hours, you'll seek out all types of resources, be excited about moving up the ladder, start business ventures, all with the premise of making a name for yourself and making money. Many head strong business types, it seems, particularly independent women, when asked if they were single and, if so, why, cite that they don't have time for a relationship, or they aren't willing to take the risk. But why? If you're willing to take the risk on your career, why not on love? Why not grind for love? What is there to be so afraid of in love that there isn't anywhere else?

I remember talking about whether or not I was ready for love. I still don't think I am. I still feel as if I have so much to do within me that to absorb whatever love out there is potentially for me - it's not time yet. But I will not do what I see so many other people do so often, especially my girls (who I still love, but I can't rock out with y'all on this one) I will not shut myself out from the possibility of love if it comes my way. And I will not push it away, either. As hard as I am going for this dream of mine, I am determined to go just as hard for love, whenever it's ready for me. I've been hurt before...really badly. I'm not the only one. But I'd be lying if I said that I didn't feel a little bit lost when I make a huge business deal or win an award and I want to share it and I have to wait until that other person is available to share it. I always said I failed sharing in kindergarten. I want my own person to share my success with. And when they're ready and I'm ready, I'm going for it. That might make me a sucka for love. I don't care. I want to be happy in love all the way around.

This is the second blog in a series about love and relationships and life, well, at least, my life. Discuss. Why do you think we have such problems in love?

Long Days and Bunless Nights

This is easily the fourth post I've started to write today. I'm going to finish this one.

I think Robin Thicke said it best: "Stressed out/Uptight/Overworked/Wound up/Unleash/What you got/Let me see your naughty side"...

Except my naughty side is just a figment of my imagination that I read about on clever websites like this one. There is nothing going on over here, at least not in a little while.

It's sooo unhealthy.

People say it's not. That's not true. A healthy sex life is proven to be an important part of a working person's lifestyle. The pheromones released while engaging in intercourse leads to clearer thinking, the calories burned while having sex leads to more exercise than some cardio...yadda yadda yadda. Don't believe me? Read this.

And yet...there is NOTHING going on on this side.

It's not even for lack of prospects. I've had some interesting proposals lately. To be honest, I have someone in mind...they're just inaccessible right now. Sigh. To that end, I started to consider recently the prospect of just having a permanent 'bakery' in my house, where I could get 'buns' all the time. You might call that a relationship. I don't know if I'm ready for that.

Well...I'm ready for the buns. Just not the rest of it. I don't think.

At any rate, allyuh, I feel that itch coming. You know the one. It's the one where yuh liming (hanging out) by somebody and yuh gone an' realize  that you are approaching tipsy...the nice tipsy, the one right before you pull out your phone, pull up that number, and proceed to put in your request for the evening.

I need to make a request somewhere. Yeah, I know. There's probably a healthier way to handle this, but whatever. Itches need scratching.

What do you do when you feel that 'itch' coming on? Do you feel that it's healthy for people to engage in casual relations? What is your take on a healthy sex life?

The Buddy Curse

I think I might have 'buddy' stamped on my forehead. No, really, I'm serious.

If you're on my FB page, then you may (or not) have seen my status about my lovely just-turned-96 year old grandmother explaining to me that the reason that I don't have a man yet is because I don't know how to fold clothes. Before that, I was chatting with an ex of mine (though I don't know if he really qualifies as an ex, but more on that later) about relationships and people and why I was still single (well, he wanted to know.)

Let's expound.

We were talking about my business (I'm a caterer and personal chef, for those reading that don't know) and how I had reached a point of stagnation, the first of many points, I'm sure, and how I wasn't going to let it frustrate me, but that I needed an assistant, for various reasons. So he was asking me about that...and then we veered into the topic of relationships, or, rather, my lack of one.

Cue the Twilight Zone music. Just trust me on this one.

So he asked me why I was still single - you know, what with me being 'so cute and smart, really smart, and articulate, well versed, very talented, and now business savvy' (I'm not tooting my own horn, I'm telling you exactly what he said). I'm here looking at the phone like, "well, maybe I should be asking you why you decided you didn't want to be with me, if I have all these redeeming qualities..." So then he says, "it's not that I didn't want to be with you...I didn't want to be with anyone. I wasn't ready to give up my oneness to make it two. I wasn't ready for the level of honesty and trust that you put out there. It's almost as if you're TOO honest...not to mention that you would know if I was screwing something up because I can talk to you about anything and I've told you that, the minute that I didn't tell you something, you'd know I was lying..."

Damn. So maybe I said that last one out loud. Hmm.

A few months back, a homie of mine told me he couldn't marry me because I was 'too observant'. When I gave him the side eye, he explained that I should take it as a compliment. I gave him a double dose of side eye. I later on realized that he meant that he couldn't get over on me, that I paid attention to detail and so I would not be with the 'games'. I guess that is a compliment. I know that he, too, told me that he could tell me anything, and that it was one of the things that he enjoyed most about me.

Obviously I'm single. Still don't know why.

Well, that's not altogether true. I do know why I'm single. I am single in part because I choose to be. I know what I want and I know that I'm not exactly where I want to be, so I remain single. On the other hand, I know that I tend to veer towards guys that I know ultimately are emotionally 'unavailable' - that is, they are not interested in a relationship for various reasons. Some of this is accidental, some of this is an unusual defense mechanism, I'm sure, to avoid dealing with the emotional accoutrement that comes with being in a relationship. Some of this is, simply, the buddy curse.

What is the buddy curse, you might ask? The buddy curse is when the guy that you are interested in likes you, likes talking to you, being with you, hanging out and/or 'hooking up' with you, but isn't with you because you are 'too cool' or 'too real'. I know that guys enjoy the chase and the allure of being with a woman and that they also enjoy a little bit of elusiveness...but I thought that they also wanted someone that they could chill with just as easily as they could dress up and take out? Have I relegated myself to being a 'buddy' because of how I am?

Guys and girls, this is when I turn to you. What do YOU look for in a mate? Do people that are much more down to earth and relaxed end up remaining 'buddies'? Thoughts, please...

Is it time to walk away?

So this morning, I read something that my homie posted and I caught a jealousy attack for about, five seconds.

GASP.

I don't do jealousy. I am secure in myself and who I am. I am secure in my relations with my friends and whomever I may be seeing/dealing with at the present moment. I know my value in each of these individual relationships, and, if for some reason, I find myself questioning my value in the relationship, then it's time to reevaluate the relationship.

So then, why the moment? Why did my heart get a little tight and my eyes a little narrower? Can I blame it on PMS (Post Menstrual Syndrome - I never get it before, only after)? What should I make of this sudden surge of emotion?

It might be time to walk away.

I say this because for the first time, I actually caught myself questioning my value to said relationship, which is interesting because I never questioned it before. I currently have enough relationships with people that I do not need anymore - that is, my circle of friends is complete, and I have no intention of making that circle bigger, of allowing anyone else in...there are enough people in that circle to care about to begin with. So saying that, when I caught myself questioning my value, it was weird.

Sometimes, writing is cathartic because as I'm writing this, I am reasoning my reaction out in my head and I am realizing that I am, indeed, overreacting. (Funny enough, my horoscope said that I would today, too.) I think I haven't had enough sleep. Sozzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

*wink* TTYL...

Torn

Disclaimer: This piece is prose of poetic fiction. Any resemblances to current people is entirely coincidental.

What happens when you feel it in your gut so strong
Unexplainable desires and wanton lust for the mind
Bodily desires cast aside, you want to be one and the same
with his brain

His words blow your mind 65 times infinity plus 4

Always leave you wanting more
But you know this bad habit is more than a song
Everyone's told you it's wrong
This type of thing you've fell victim to for too long

So what does one do?

When the waking moment desire is only to open your eyes by his side
And cast away all insecurities to take over the world together
Your heart on his sleeve to be caressed yet your mind continues to be that rolling stone
let's not forget that this feeling is wrong

How do you stop being torn?
